It's official [Dec. 1st, 2008|11:03 pm]
Julianna Swan

I am changing blogs.

Please update your links!

This isn't really goodbye because I still need this journal for friends only for venting, plus I don't know that I could ever fully abandon it, I've been here for so long! But most non-very personal things are going to be at the new blog. There are many reasons for the change, the main ones are pictures are easier to deal with and there aren't big ugly adds all over the place.
I hope you'll keep reading over there (I've discovered the delight of Google reader, which I recommend), and I'll still be checking my friends list!

Wintertide [Nov. 30th, 2008|09:23 am]
Julianna Swan

The opening last night was nice, there were a ton of people there. There were also a ton of people IN the show, quite a few of them amazingly talented friends, and everything looked amazing all together! When I first got there I was in a bad mood (I think I may have actually had a black rain cloud over my head), but as more friends arrived I perked up a bit and ended up staying quite a while and I'm happy I did because I ended up meeting a few people I am huge art fans of!

The beautiful window of course is by my friend and roommate Rebecca Artemisa Urias

East is over West is under [Nov. 20th, 2008|09:10 pm]

I went on a walk today and saw this marvelous mushroom fairy castle! It's in the garden of one of my favorite 'yards' in the neighborhood, it's wild looking but well tended and full of interesting things.

It looks like a consensus for no on separate shops! Thank you all for your input, you made a good case! I will be keeping just the one shop.

Poll of sorts... [Nov. 20th, 2008|09:08 am]
Julianna Swan

I updated the shop with Christmas cards but I have a question for you:

Do you think I should open a new separate shop for cards only?

Please give me your opinion, I'm so undecided, sometimes I think it would be a good idea because they would be more visible, sometimes not because it might be better to have everything in one place.

I think it was a unanimous no! Thanks!

Stir your stumps [Nov. 19th, 2008|08:27 am]
Julianna Swan

I've been feeling sort of Christmasy lately. I love christmas so much, it makes me happy just to think about it. I love the long drawn out time between Halloween and Christmas. It's not exactly cold here but I enjoy looking out my window and seeing smoke coming from all chimneys. Why did I move to a place with no snow though!? I love snow, I'm craving heavily frosted rooftops. Plus, I have to say, I'm really looking forward to going home.

I would love to go to a German Christmas market, they look pretty marvelous.

Also, I just added Christmas cards to theshop!

Well... [Nov. 14th, 2008|12:27 pm]
Julianna Swan

I'm in this show, up right now!

146 Water St
Warren RI 02885

I'm in this show coming up:

AG Artists Shop
Opening Reception: 11/21/2008 Friday 7-10pm
About Glamour Inc. 107-A North 3rd Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211 USA

Whew. Well on Monday night my poor laptops frayed power cord burst into flames so I've been computerless since tuesday while I waited for my other one to come in the mail (I had my mom send one from from my old computer at home because no way am I spending $80 on a new cord if I don't have to). I thought it would be a nice enforced computer break but instead of feeling refreshed I just felt out of touch and I couldn't even work on all the non-internet things I have to get done! And now I'm SO STRESSED because I have a ton of orders that didn't go out today because I couldn't get to them, I hate being behind. Also I have to make some things for a show because as usual nothing I actual have already made fits the specifications for the show (that's always how it goes). AND I have a bunch of things I need to update the shop with. I did take some nice long walks to Mt. Tabor though, and made soup.

Well, all I want to do is bask in computer love for hours and hour but I have all these things to do so I'll get to that later. Expect pictures.

Sewing circle [Nov. 9th, 2008|09:10 am]
Julianna Swan
Last night I went to a mending party, we were all supposed to bring clothes and things that we'd been putting off fixing (there was a fair amount of drawing going on as well). It was so nice just to visit and sit by the fire. I had some frayed buttonholes but mostly I worked on my blanket! Since August I've been working on all these little hexagons and last week I finally attached them all. It's a small blanket but I'm proud.

More favorite movie film stills [Nov. 9th, 2008|12:36 am]
Julianna Swan

These are from Pandaemonium, which is a movie I love and not many people seem to know about. It's loosely based on the relationship between the poets Wordsworth and Coleridge and Coleridge's opium habit and the writing of Kubla Khan, so obviously I love the story, but also the setting, the clothes, etc. Here are some of the most beautiful scenes, but you should really see the film (though I doubt its for everyone)

Black Forest [Nov. 8th, 2008|04:03 pm]
Julianna Swan
Ullabenulla just posted these wonderful carvings in her blog and I got so excited I had to post about them as well. They are like my dreams come true! I know things like this existed but I've never seen a whole website devoted to them. I wish I could have one, or a house filled with them!

The whole wide world is watchin'. [Nov. 4th, 2008|07:06 am]
Julianna Swan

Friends, this is it.

I don't know about you but I'm feeling very emotional. Here is a perfect song for today:

Oh the seas will split
And the ship will hit
And the sands on the shoreline will be shaking.
Then the tide will sound
And the wind will pound
And the morning will be breaking.

Then they'll raise their hands,
Sayin' we'll meet all your demands,
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered.
And like Pharaoh's tribe,
They'll be drownded in the tide,
And like Goliath, they'll be conquered.

I've been keeping this under my hat for a little while, I guess I was afraid it wouldn't seem real, but the press release is out and I have the loan agreement forms so it's feeling pretty real now!

970 applicants
17 artists selected
28 works
7 artists have exhibited in previous Biennials*

After receiving a record number of 970 entries for the 2009 Portland Museum of Art Biennial exhibition, the Portland Museum of Art is pleased to announce that 28 works by 17 artists have been selected for the show. This past summer, artists submitted 3,800 works of art to be considered by a panel of three jurors: Elizabeth Burke, Dan Graham, and Denise Markonish. The jurors spent a weekend in September viewing images and selecting the work for next year's Biennial.

Each Biennial is uniquely formed by the jurors' collective vision and the work presented to them. This year more than ever before, the selected works reflect the jurors' intent to curate the exhibition as a whole and allow for a more intimate experience of each artist's work. The sixth Biennial will present a close examination of works by a small, but diverse group of artists with ties to Maine, rather than a broad survey of the contemporary art scene here.

Of the 17 artists chosen, 7 have participated in previous Biennial exhibitions. The majority of Biennial artists are full or part-time residents, and a number of them are affiliated with one of Maine's many prestigious art programs. Their work is created in media ranging from painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography to sculpture, installation, and video. This blend of influences and experiences enriches the state's artistic community and defines its art scene as one that reflects a diversity of traditions-both established and new.

The 2009 Biennial will be on view from April 8 through June 7, 2009. A full-color catalogue will be published in conjunction with the exhibition and will be available in the Museum Store next spring.

This is pretty huge for me! I've been rejected from the PMA Biennial so many times, and to be picked this year out of a record number of entries, and when they picked less artists, well, it just feels really good.

I always travel by balloon [Nov. 1st, 2008|09:19 pm]

I managed to throw this costume together with things I already own, I'm pretty impressed about that.

Crackerjack 30's or 40's reporter. Though it could easily be transformed into a tourist, or birdwatcher...

Rebecca was a fox, wearing a garden? (also known as my sidekick 'gordita')

Also, the brooches are now in the shop

Something is wrong with my website host, none of my pictures uploaded there are working, I don't know what's going on!
